About the Canyon

The northern portion of Palo Duro Canyon, which we refer to as North Palo Duro Canyon, is located about twelve miles south of Amarillo, Texas, and is that portion of the Palo Duro Canyon lying between Lake Tanglewood, Texas, and the Palo Duro Canyon State Park.  This stretch of canyon is only about eight miles long and is a uniquely narrow portion of Palo Duro Canyon, being its northernmost tip, with a width at upper caprock elevation ranging from around 2,500 feet to around 6,000 feet in locations near the State Park, with depths up to 600 feet.   People often refer to the entire Palo Duro Canyon as the "Grand Canyon of Texas" due to the Canyon's striking features and overall length.  In total, the Canyon is 120 miles long, stretching to over 20 miles wide at points, with a maximum depth of 800 feet.
