Loss of Breathtaking Views

Link_AA640_1

If you are driving through Amarillo, Texas, you may not realize how extraordinarily beautiful our area is.   But if you arrive in Amarillo at the airport and see the pictures of the landscape and beautiful horizon on the airport walls, or if you pay attention to some of the road signs along the way, you soon begin to realize that just a few miles down the road is the Palo Duro Canyon.

The views all along the canyon are in one word—breathtaking.

Amarilloans are proud of the Palo Duro Canyon, its beauty and its wildlife.  People enjoy the views on foot in the Palo Duro Canyon State Park and from their homes in neighboring canyon rim developments.   Helicopters and small planes fly over the canyon daily for a glimpse.

In the North Palo Duro Canyon, an example of one of these extraordinary views is the picture above, which was taken from the Link AA point that Sharyland has proposed to cross with their 345kV transmission line.  If the 345kV transmission line is placed across this point, no one will enjoy this view ever again.  In fact, the new view will have the opposite effect—it will be disgusting.

It would be a tragedy if the scenic views along this canyon were forever lost.  As one person recently told me, "Amarillo doesn't have too many pretty places.  We should fight for those we have left."
